What's being installed on ITA PC's?

Word has it that on "casual" Friday student workers were on *all ITA floors installing "something" on staffers PC's.

Those not present will arrive to work Monday wondering who has been messing around at their desks. Simmons' minions? One can only surmise.

Remember to check your PC for anything running "illegally".

*CORRECTION: According to one comment the student workers were not seen on all ITA floors. If anyone knows the specifics or you saw them in your area, please place your info in the comments or email.

Rumblings will gather any info received on where they were and will report here later.

Some conspiracy theorist. It's Zenworks discovery tool. Microsoft is doing an audit of software in ITA. MS wants to make sure the department doesn't have any illegal copies of Microsoft products.

Of course if ITA management really wanted to save money (they don't) they would dump MS and go to open source operating systems and office suites.

Interesting. Who are you? The students weren't on "all ITA floors" Friday. They only made it to specific sections. Hmmmmmm.

Does anyone know which floors they were working on?

Didn't witness what the student workers were doing. However, a couple weeks ago, a friend at Public Works was asking me questions about ZenWorks and rumors circulating in that building. Rumors had it that ZenWorks was being installed so that the boss could view everyone's
screen remotely to find out what they were doing.

On the other hand, occasionally ISS staff install some kind of Microsoft patch kit on people's machines, but usually that's a few
months after the fact.

Keep on rumbling!

Who even knows what the "students" look like.

Nothing sinister going on here. Like the first comment stated it's for an audit. If you want more specifics just call ISS.

To all ITA Employees (excluding those using non ITA funded equipment),

In order to track ITA assets and respond to a license audit, Internal Support Services (ISS) is installing Novell Zenworks client on all ITA PCs. ISS had deployed the software on majority of PCs prior to the audit request. The current deployment is completing the process so we have an accurate count of PCs and corresponding software.

The installation takes less than five minutes. We appreciate your co-operation and patience as ISS installs the client software on your PCs.

We are also requesting that you return any excess equipment for salvage and keep only one PC per employee as otherwise the City has to pay a higher cost to maintain the equipment. If you have a business need to keep a secondary machine for testing applications, please request your AGM's approval and send the approved list of secondary PCs and justification to ISS.

Please contact Tuan Ngo at 978-3357 or email Kirk Yamamoto if you need further information.
thanks
